Great Otway National Park: The Redwoods, Hopetoun Falls and Otway Fly Treetop Adventures

As we’ve settled into Melbourne life, I’ve always looked into where we could venture out and see some great Australian nature. The Great Otway National Park was high up on our list, so when we travelled down to Apollo Bay, it was great to see The Redwoods and Hopetoun Falls on the itinerary as some of the things to see.

If you’re coming from Apollo Bay, it’s less than an hour away and the road to The Otways is beautiful. We even managed to come across a black kangaroo—we still haven’t seen a normal one!

Great Otway National Park - The Redwoods

We stopped off at The Redwoods first, and in an instant, you’re surrounded by beautiful Californian Redwood trees with incredibly crisp air. We immediately got our cameras out to capture the scenery. If there are two things we like to take photos of, it’s cities and nature!

Photographer mode: on.

With so much greenery around and the air so crisp, it was great to be out of the city and in pure nature. There was hardly anyone around it felt great to go somewhere and recharge.

Hopetoun Falls

Round the corner from The Redwood Forest, are the Hopetoun Falls. It’s a short ten-minute walk from the carpark and a great stop to check out a beautiful waterfall and more greenery.

Otway Fly Treetop Adventures

From our forest walks, we went on to Otway Fly Treetop Adventures for some ziplining activities!

We’d been ziplining before in the UK, so were thrilled to do it again, in a much bigger forest! With the Otway Fly Treetop Adventures, you have two guides helping you through “cloud” platforms, in between the ziplines. They were fantastic in providing great information about the surrounding forest we were in, as well as entertaining us throughout the ziplining. You can check our GoPro footage of us ziplining through the forest in the vlog below.

If zip lining isn’t for you, but you still want to get a good view, there’s a treetop walk, that takes about an hour to complete.

Exploring The Otways can be done in a day trip, so if you’re into nature or want to go for a forest walk, it’s easily accessible if you have a car. It’s not too far away to explore from Melbourne and there are multiple other waterfalls in the area such as Triplet Falls, which we didn’t manage to see.

Check out our vlog featuring our whole trip to Apollo Bay and The Otway adventures!
