White Water Rafting and Where to Stay in Rotorua

Rotorua: One of the most visited places in the North Island.

If you read our last blog post when we were in Bay of Plenty for a couple of days, you’d know we got rained out. Big time. The rain didn’t stop us from our next activity though, as we were already going to get wet; white water rafting!

It. Was. Awesome 🤘

This post is just a small chapter of our extended road trip throughout the North and South Islands of New Zealand. Make sure to check out our whole trip and detailed itinerary within the main post!

White water rafting with the River Rats is easily one of the best activities you can do in the North Island. We’d previously seen Devin Supertramp’s YouTube video of the same rapids, but it was unreal to actually experience it for ourselves! Of course, we don’t have a full production team like Devin has, however Joe has a GoPro! 😂👍

In all seriousness though, we genuinely had the best time and hopefully you can see that in our vlog, with a dedicated rafting montage a few minutes into it.

If that didn’t show how much of a great time we had, here are a few photos showing how carried away I got, with how much fun I had.

The photos were taken from the River Rats dedicated photographer, who snaps shots from various vantage points along the route. You can purchase the digital photos after your experience has ended, but I should point out that I’ve edited the style of them slightly in Lightroom.

Where to stay in Rotorua

With achey arms and wet clothes, we were ready to check in to a super comfortable lodge, Cedarwood Lakeside—just 4 minutes away from the River Rats/Rotorua Airport.

As our itinerary has been catered for us to document a true kiwi experience, we’ve been lucky to stay at various places around New Zealand. Cedarwood Lakeside is a beautiful place to stay with your family or friends, as the accommodation ranges from studio to 2 bedroom units, all in the style of a cabin.

The motel has an amazing view of Lake Rotorua right on your doorstep, which brings such a calm vibe as a perfect getaway place.

Plus if you’re a traveller who likes needs to be connected to fast, reliable and most importantly, unlimited Internet (updating social media like us), they have the fastest wifi as well as the softest bed sheets. That’s the best combo if you ever ask me! 📱🛌

The Redwoods

Our next stop was towards Mount Ruapehu, but we decided to stop off at the Redwoods just outside the centre of Rotorua. We love a good forest walk and this was highly recommended on many lists of walks to do in Rotorua. We didn’t want to spend too long there, so we decided to stop near The Redwoods (the paid entry walk) and do our own (free) loop around the forest.
