Tsukiji Fish Market and Ginza, Tokyo

One of the top things to do in Tokyo—as recommended by pretty much every Japan travel guide—is visit Tsukiji Fish Market. It’s one of the most famous markets in the country and very easily accessible from Ginza in Tokyo. We didn’t get to visit when the main fish market was open, but regardless of that, it’s still a great way to spend a few hours.

If you did want to explore Tsukiji Fish Market during it’s peak operating times, there are plenty of of tours you can book that guarantee entry, as space on the day can be quite limited.

We filmed a vlog for our Jelly Journeys YouTube channel that included a section on Ginza and Tsukiji Fish Market. Watch it below and subscribe to our channel for future updates!

Although Tsukiji has it’s own station and transport options, it’s also nice to walk the road leading up to Tsukiji Market from Ginza and Yūrakuchō. Ginza is known as one of the biggest shopping districts in Tokyo, especially for designer clothes and luxury brands.

Even though the main fish market wasn’t open when we went, there were still other stalls open throughout the day. The area is covered in loads of street food options to browse and buy.

One of the most popular things to eat at the market is an egg stick. I queued up to try out a fluffy, but densely layered, egg on a stick. It was more of a sweet snack, although in my opinion it was just okay. The queue was only around 5 minutes and felt really quick, so if you’re really eager to try it, I would suggest it as it’s not that expensive.

Of course, there’s a lot of seafood to try at Tsukiji Market. I tried some soy scallops which were pretty great, but there was so much selection to choose from, I struggled to decide what to eat.

I think the food can be quite seasonal, as there was a lot of crab available, which is very much a seasonal February food. Also, the strawberries were in high season, so a lot of mochi strawberries were there too, which looked so good!

Since we didn’t plan to eat there for the entire day, it was nice to be able to explore and still get some images whilst we walked around the area.

On the way back home, we made a quick stop at Tokyu Plaza near Yūrakuchō station. You can go right to the rooftop and get a great aerial view of the crossing below.
